Property Description

Porters Villa Barbados is a luxury 3-bedroom villa located in the Grounds of the incredibly beautiful Porters Plantation Estate on the west coast of Barbados. It is one of the island's best secrets and hidden gems. Porters Plantation Villa has its location in over 23 acres of the most incredibly beautiful grounds. It dates back to 1660 when it was owned by William Porter who was a member o the Barbados House of Assembly and operated it as one of the biggest Sugar Plantations in the Caribbean. Today, clients can enjoy this incredibly beautiful estate by staying at the Plantation Villa which has its location on the grounds of the original plantation house. This beautiful Barbados Villa has full and exclusive access to to the grounds of Porters Great House including the Estate swimming pool, the fully equipped gymnasium and the 23 acres of gardens.

Although completely refurbished and remodelled in 2019, Porters Villa retains the original coral-stone exterior. The original villa which was the old carriage house connects seamlessly with a modern wing which is both atmospheric and spacious. The home is full of charm but is also incredibly luxurious. The main living room and fully equipped kitchen have their location at one end of the house and the three en-suite bedrooms at the other end of the house.  In the middle, the villa opens onto a stunning garden and lily pond.

Porters Villa has three beautiful en-suite bedrooms. The master bedroom which is in the original part of the house has a king bed, en-suite bathroom with substantial glass-walled shower and a walk-in closet. Both the master bedroom and the living room have tiled floors and large windows which overlook the gardens. The master bedroom has a beautiful and vibrant sunlit ambience.

The two guest bedrooms have two single beds or twins in each. It is possible to arrange both the guest rooms as either twins or King doubles. They are both identical in their positioning and have walk-in wardrobes, en-suite bathrooms with large galls wall showers.  They both have beautiful and unobstructed views of the Mahogany trees and gardens of the estate.

The living room is cozy with modern décor and a supremely comfortable sitting area. There is a study corner and flat-screen cable television. The dining area is one of the most beautiful parts of the home. It has quasi rustic décor with a considerable metalwork chandelier and marble floors. The dining area flows seamlessly onto the garden with a semi-open-air ambiance. The walls are designed entirely from wooden shutters which open and flow into the corridor with the two guest bedrooms.

Porters Villa comes complete with a very modern and spacious kitchen and laundry room.  The kitchen has marble floors, quartz countertops, an island and double sinks. The kitchen has every imaginable utensil and appliance.

Porters Villa is super flexible because the beds may be made up as twins or King beds. The home is perfect for three couples or a family group. Porters Villa is also extremely private and very romantic making it an ideal venue for a honeymoon.

THE GROUNDS AND THE POOL

The grounds of Porter’s Great House are so incredibly impressive; they warrant a special mention. It is possible to spend one's entire vacation exploring the 23 acres and each day discover something new and exciting. The entrance is imposing with a winding road that is flanked on both sides by and an enchanting forest of ancient mahogany trees. The focal point of the gardens is the enormous rolling lawn leading up to an Italian style folly at the top. To the north of the property there is a fernery and beyond that is the original Porter’s sugar factory. Beside the factory is a mill wall which was initially the mill used to grind corn.

The whole garden is full of tropical shrubs and flowers, creating a profusion of color and sweet tropical smells. If you look carefully, you are likely to spot birds of paradise frolicking around the garden. There are too many species of trees to mention them all. However, some of the most interesting is the Bauhinia Tree or Orchid Tree, Flamboyant and Shakshak trees.

A striking neo-classical pavilion is the location for the beautiful swimming pool. The original pool dated back to the 18th century and was one of the first to be built on the island of Barbados. Today it is a beautiful serene area with a lovely gazebo and places for outdoor dining and relaxation.

There is even a chapel in the gardens which has a statue of Francis of Assisi placed in a niche in the wall. There are so many nooks and crannies and exciting spots to explore that one will undoubtedly have the feeling of exploring a secret garden from a time in history.

THE HISTORY

Porters Great House is one of the most historically impressive Plantation Houses on the island of Barbados. The big difference is the others are open to the public while Porter’s House is only available to the lucky guests who rent the lovely Porters Villa.

Built-in 1660, the original Porters Plantation hose was owned by William Porter hence the name. In the 1720’s it was passed to the Honourable Dudley Woodbridge who was head of the Royal Africa Company. During the 18th Century, the house was owned by the Alleyne Family until 1949 when it was bought by Murtogh D Guinness who was from the famous Guinness brewing factory.

Over the years, Porters Great House underwent two major renovations and in 2019, the Porters Villa opened following a complete renovation.

Customer Reviews

To the owners,
What an honor it was being some of the first guests at the Porters Great House Cottage! Upon our arrival we slithered down the jungle draped driveway spotting dozens of Barbadian Green Monkeys! We were pleasantly surprised that the cottage sat just next to the historic plantation home and its rolling tropical gardens, koi ponds and sprawling outdoor lounge areas. We prayed in the chapel on Palm Sunday and had an Easter Egg hunt on the spongy backyard grasses before Easter. While these are some of our favorite spring holiday traditions at home they were so much more fun and memorable in this paradise! We tried very hard to take full advantage of all that this property had to offer and couldn’t even scratch the surface! The cottage smelled of the island’s flora, beautiful and fresh! Everyday we spotted new details in each of the home’s decorations. The furniture was comfortable, the flow was comfortable - everything was comfortable and allowed full vacation mode to set in instantly! The staff around the grounds were always smiling, greeting us by name and teaching our children about the local environment. Our cook, Fay, made sure we ate local favorites but accommodated us and surprised us with her own delicious twists on our routine requests! Mania sincerely cared for the home and took an interest in our kids, asking them questions about their days and adventures. Our hopes in writing this is to communicate our utmost thanks. We appreciated the trust you left in your guests and the respect you showed for them by opening your personal spaces for their use - it was very generous.

Thank you for a wonderful stay in a stunning country! What a beautiful property filled with adventure, beauty and wonderful memories for our family. From daily dips in the pool to evening walks with the monkeys - this truly was a wonderful stay. Lou-Ann, Mania and the rest of the staff are wonderful, friendly and so kind. Thank you to Mania and Lou-Ann for taking our daughter in as their own, walking her to see the fish and making breakfast with her.

What our Experts say

I visited Porters Great House Cottage in Nov 2019 & was so impressed. Guests staying here enter by the very grand Great House entrance & drive up the Bearded Fig Tree lane way to the cottage. It's so lovely. The décor is stunning - beautifully finished & very modern. Another win here is the beautiful gardens & private pool that the guests have access to. There's even a gym!I'd highly recommend this rental for those looking for a quiet villa stay with immaculate décor. Good to know the beach by the Colony Club is the closest - you can stroll or drive down.
